Understanding how Shopify payment processing works

Posted on

As a small business owner, understanding the payment process on Shopify is crucial. When customers check out, they can pay using any method activated in your Shopify admin’s Payment providers section. Shopify supports various payment methods:

  1. Credit Card Payments: Enable Shopify Payments or a third-party provider for credit card transactions.
  2. Alternative Online Payments: Activate options such as PayPal, Meta Pay, Amazon Pay, and Apple Pay.
  3. Additional Payment Methods: Consider accepting cryptocurrency and other payment methods to provide more flexibility for your customers.

How you get paid

When setting up a payment provider to accept credit card payments, there is typically a delay between the customer’s payment and your receipt of funds due to processing times. After processing, the funds are transferred to your merchant account.

Payment providers like PayPal have unique methods for transferring funds. Verify with your chosen provider for specific details. You can also accept manual payments such as money orders or bank transfers. If Shopify Payments is not activated, third-party transaction fees apply to all orders processed through Shopify’s checkout system.

Activating Shopify Payments allows you to receive payments via Shopify Payouts for transactions made through Shopify Payments and specific accelerated checkouts. Payments through third-party gateways do not display payout information in your Shopify admin.
